Timeline Of What To Do Before Applying For Dental School: Freshman Year

Meeting with your advisor as soon as possible and making your aspirations known will help you in the long run. Your advisor can help you schedule science-heavy classes such as biology and chemistry. You can also ask for recommendations for any clubs at the school that are focused on pre-medical or pre-dental studies. It is a great opportunity to network with like-minded students who may be in the process of applying to dental school and can help mentor you.

Research Dental Professions

There are many different areas of expertise that a dentist can study. Research the areas that are of interest to you. Be sure to speak with your own dentist or anyone who may work in the dental field and can help enlighten you about both the advantages as well as the challenges they face. 

Prepare and Learn About Finances

Many young adults don’t truly understand the value of money and how financial choices you make, even at a young age, can greatly impact your future. It is never too early to start to learn about how to budget your money, control your spending habits, and how credit card use can affect you in your future. This is particularly important to learn about if you are interested in taking out a loan for your future schooling. Each university offers different courses and training programs that can assist with personal growth. Be sure to investigate to see if they offer any courses on personal finance. 

During the Summer

Volunteer or work in a dental office for experience. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn first-hand what dentists and professionals in a dental office go through on a day to day basis. You can also research and participate in a summer academic program that focuses on dental school preparation.
