Preparing for college can be a daunting task. It’s a unique experience that comes with many challenges. You can prepare for these challenges by developing proactive skills that will help you navigate the process. While college preparation is one thing, choosing a major that’s right for you can be just as difficult for many young students who have just graduated from High School, but it doesn’t have to be! The following article will outline a few tips to consider when choosing a major that’s right for you.

Don’t Be Afraid to Talk to Others

A common misconception about attending college is that you have to know as soon as you graduate high school, what you want to study and which occupation you wish to purse. This might be the case for some students but not for most. Talk to you teachers, advisors, family and friends. Let them know what you enjoy most in life, what subjects you excelled at throughout high school, and what interests you. You might be surprised at their responses, as they may have advice on certain majors or fields that you hadn’t considered but makes sense based on your corresponding interests and academic achievements.

Ask Your Teenage Self

Being told to choose a major at 18 years of age is a difficult ask for any person at any stage in life, let alone a teenager! It doesn’t have to be, though. Sometimes following your passions can help you discover the major that’s right for you. Microsoft’s Bill Gates said "The thing that you're likely to be world-class at is whatever you obsessed over from age 12 to 18. In my case, it was writing software". You’re going to be spending copious amounts of your time working in this field, you better have a drive to do so. Your true passions lie in what you already enjoy and what you are familiar with. I’m not saying you shouldn’t take new and diverse classes, I encourage it! But ask yourself, “What would my teenager brain say about [insert major]?”

What is the Earning Potential?

Salary potential might not be your biggest concern now, but it is important to consider. There are often two sides to this question. You want to choose a major where you can become financially successful, but also a major that will allow you to work in fields or industries that currently have job opportunities and are projected to continue creating jobs in the future. It is NOT all about the money. Following your passions and interests will always lead to a rewarding career regardless or your financial compensation. But it is a very important to consider when choosing a major that’s right for you.
